Portrait Drawing

Whenever visiting Thailand, be it in Bangkok or other provinces, one will never fail to see artists on the streets or shops drawing life portraits, or portrait from photographs, for sale.

I have always been amazed by these artists, who are able to duplicate any portrait photographs onto their drawing board by just using pencil and charcoal. The uncannily alikeness between the original photographs and their black and white drawings is simply unbelievable.

Inspired, motivated, though still untalented, I decided to pick up portrait drawing. Armed with a guidebook, an easel that I recently bought, and some necessary drawing materials, I started to explore this new found hobby of mine. Coincidentally, my childhood art teacher is still teaching in a neighbourhood RC, and with just a low tuition fee of $25 per 4 lessons, how could I resist the temptation to enrol in her drawing lessons once again?

Well, I’m giving myself half a year from now. Hopefully, in September, I’ll be able to produce my first 见得人的 portrait drawing. :D

Define Density

Qn: Define density.

Ans: Density is how dense an object is.

Witty attempt. Hehe. Got me reminded of myself scribbling anything that I could think of during my secondary school tests/exams in a desperate attempt to score points. I never succeeded.

Koh Chang

So I went to Thailand again, and this time i visited Koh Chang.

Koh Chang is the second largest island of Thailand, located on the Thai east coast 310 km away from Bangkok and it is near the border to Cambodia. After about 6-7 hours of bus/pick-up/ferry, I finally reached my hut by the lagoon.

This is where I lodged. No aircon and not exactly of 5-star quality, but it’s a real cosy and relaxing place to stay in.

The view is superb, and the environment gives you a peaceful feeling at all times. What’s so good about this island is that it’s still not touristy and overcrowded with party animals yet.

On my first day, it was just lazing around and strolling along the beach. It was the second day that I was really looking forward to.

Signed up for a whole day package for snorkelling, we set off early in the morning. We would island hop and snorkel at 4 different islands. I’m glad I borrowed my friend’s underwater casing + camera. Although I’m not proficient at taking under-water pictures, I managed to capture some sweet memories nevertheless.

It was my second time snorkelling (first time was in Kinabalu back in 2006), and a good experience it was. I’m not good at identifying the sea beauties though, so just enjoy the pictures yeah? :P

Oh! And feeding the fishes in the water was real fun! just grab hold to a piece of bread, and the fishes would shylessly swim towards you and bite the bread. Apparently, the hungry creatures got so excited that some didn’t aim well enough, and bit my hand instead.

It was really fun. I’m missing the moments right now. :(

Well, time to continue to work hard for the next term, so that I can reward myself with trips in the June holidays! :D

Singapore Biathlon 2008

I completed the Singapore Biathlon yesterday morning. It was my 3rd biathlon, and my 2nd in 2 weeks. The turn-out was huge, but this event was dominated by men (I believe only 5% of the 2000 odd people were females). Weather was good because there was a heavy downpour just before the start of the event. No strong sun, and there was a slight drizzle during my run leg. Haha, too bad for those people who badly wanted a tan, but I enjoyed the swim plus run throughout. The finisher t-shirt was really cartoonish, and the medal design is typical of what you would receive in any TAS (triathlon Association of Singapore) event. At least it is 10x better than the NUS biathlon’s medal. :P

Finisher’s Medal (it won’t stay long in my possession.. heh)

Ahh. Reservist in 7 hrs’ time. I prefer greenboard marker to rifle. Then again, at least I don’t need to go around being pricked by needles this coming week. Won’t be updating for at least 1 week. Seeya people! emoticon
